Practically self-trained, Clivia Nobili didn’t waste time at school waiting to practice her passion for fashion: at age 17, she left the south of France to take on Paris. Her single goal: to work in the world of fashion, an obsession of hers since birth. She started off in public relations, working with Yohji Yamamoto for four years. She took advantage of her stint there to discover behind the scenes the craft of the couturier.
This opened a whole new world to her, where she left for New York to work as a photographer’s stylist assistant. While there, she took design and drawing classes at the world-famous Fashion Institute of Technology. At the age of 24, she returned to France, settling in Marseille and stringing together gigs that used the skills she had acquired, such as costuming and dressing actors for feature films and television productions. She also launched her first collection under her name. The label Clivia Nobili approaches fashion from a different perspective, taking the roots of workwear and reinterpreting it through the designer’s eyes, intellect and influences – be they literature, art or music. This label is truly Made in France, with each piece composed of top notch fabrics and finely finished details. The comfort and wearability of a Clivia Nobili garment prove that fashion can feel as good as it looks. ‘I have this connection with cotton, with the feel and the history of different fabrics. Every piece of clothing has a form and a story that’s sociological.’
